Think about when you were at school, usually that time is the most social time of anyone’s life. But why is that? One word, proximity. You see the same people over and over again, throughout you’re entire school career. You study together, you go to class together, you eat lunch together. You can’t help but turn acquaintances into friends all based on being around each other.
Now think about your life now, you go to work, you may have some friends at work, but really it’s not the same kind of friendships, probably cause we just pack up and go home and forget about work till the next day. We don’t have time to stick with the people we work with after work.
It works the same way with Online Communities. If you want to foster friendships between your members, you must hold events that help those bonds form. If you rely only on a video chat once a week, it’s going to be an uphill battle to get them talking with each other and going and and doing things together.
Try and give them as many IRL interactions as you can to get them to foster friendships within.
